1. A unit of weight (avoirdupois); 7000 grains equal one pound.
2. The grain unit is commonly used in American and English ammunition practice to measure the weight of components. Grain size a used in photographic films: the light-sensitive silver halides that are impregnated in the emulsion exist as small crystals and upon development are converted to pure silver granules. Under the microscope these crystals are found to vary in size with different types of films and photographic papers.
